Malta Fun Fair -
A GREAT time was had by all at Malta Elementary's annual Fun Fair. Students tried their skill at nearly 20 different games, and had the opportunity to win donated themed baskets. Some of the baskets available were chocolate lovers, an NIU basket, a baking basket, tween literature, sports, animals, as well as many others.
In addition to games and baskets, students were able to have their hair spray painted in wild colors to show their Malta spirit. Another busy station was face painting. The artist created masterpieces on our student faces. Many different designs were available including an NIU Huskie, lions, as well as moustaches.
The Fun Fair is one of Malta Elementary's major fundraising events. Nearly $6,000 was raised through the efforts of many and the generous support of the school, parents, and community.

"Sparkle and Shine"
Fifth graders had their opportunity to showcase the past year of their work during Malta's Sparkle and Shine at Malta Elementary on Friday May 23rd. Students were encouraged to invite parents and loved ones to visit the school to show off their hard work. Each student shared their projects and works with their family, and presented it to them in a homemade portfolio. Projects included persuasive papers, science experiments, social studies, art and many other subjects. Parents and students alike were able to enjoy a picnic-like lunch to conclude their event.
For fifth grade students, Sparkle and Shine is an annual tradition at Malta Elementary. These students will move on to middle school next year, and Malta will be part of their educational past. This event allowed students to relish in their works, and share their pride with their family.
"Sparkle and Shine has always been a "rite of passage" for 5th graders. They love showing off their hard work," stated Mrs. Brock, 5th grade teacher.
Jen Cavallo, 5th grade teacher added, "Sparkle and Shine is a great "wrap-up" of 5th grade and gives students and parents the opportunity to review all of the hard work and accomplishments of 5th grade. Additionally, students realize how much they have learned throughout the year. We are proud of what our students do everyday. Sparkle and Shine gives us the opportunity to share our pride with their parents."

Malta Elementary Students Really Know How To Use Their Noodles
Second and third grade students at Malta Elementary learned how the shin bone was connected to the knee bone during a hands on project in their Physical Education class. Students used noodles to represent various bone as they constructed their very own skeleton.
"As we worked with the Skeletal System, this project was a good way for the students to show others what they've learned. It was a great hands on experience for all the students," said Mrs. Boyle, Physical Education teacher for Malta Elementary.
The students work was on display until June 3rd at Malta Elementary.

D.A.R.E. Graduation at Malta
After a 10-week class, the fifth grade students of Malta Elementary celebrated their D.A.R.E. graduation. The audience celebrating their graduation included parents, D.A.R.E. office Ron Elcock, their classroom teachers, school Principal Connie Rohlman, and Malta Village President Vince McCabe.
For the past ten weeks, these fifth grade students have been learning about drugs and alcohol through the D.A.R.E program. Many students eagerly shared much of what they learned about cigarettes, drugs and alcohol, including the thousands of known poisons in cigarettes, as well as how advertising is geared to entice a young audience. In addition to knowledge of drugs and alcohol, students also learned about peer pressure and positive peer pressure.
The event concluded with the reading of six student essays. Students wrote these essays to explain what the D.A.R.E. program taught them and how it will help them stay drug and alcohol free. Some essays were personal reflections of how this program will make a difference as they move to middle school, high school and beyond.

Principal Connie Rohlman, Officer Ron Elcock, and Malta Village President, Vince McCabe help Malta students celebrate D.A.R.E. graduation.

Malta Elementary Named as Illinois Academic Improvement School
The Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) has announced that six schools in DeKalb Community Unit District 428 have qualified for state recognition in 2007, based on student achievement at the schools over the past three years. Chesebro and Littlejohn Elementary Schools have been named Spotlight Schools for the second consecutive year. Tyler Elementary was named as a Spotlight School for the first time this year. Malta Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, and Clinton Rosette Middle School were named as Academic Improvement Schools. Huntley Middle School was named as an Academic Improvement School last year, and Lincoln Elementary School joined a select group of schools as an Academic Excellence School last year.
To receive recognition as an Academic Improvement School, the school must either show either a 7.5 point improvement in state test scores in both reading and mathematics between 2006 and 2007, or show at least a fifteen point improvement in state testing scores between 2005 and 2007. The school must also show an upward trend in state test results.
“The staff, students, and parents have been working hard together to achieve this level of improvement”, said Connie Rohlman, principal of Malta Elementary School. “We will continue to work hard in partnership with our parents and the community in our efforts for continual improvement”.
“This type of comprehensive improvement and the resulting recognition, does not happen by accident”, according to Superintendent of Schools, Paul Beilfuss. “A prolonged, consistent, and collaborative relationship among our classroom teachers, other professional and classified staff, working together over a period of years with district administrators in partnership with parents, guardians, families, and the community, brings about positive results. We will strive for continued academic excellence as we work to attain additional capacity for the growth occurring in our district”.
