Lesson Gallery - First Grade Creative Expression
Where would you fly? As the first grades studied insects and bats, they created drawings about where they would go if they were able to fly and how they would fly. In creating these works, we reviewed our knowledge of landscape and how artists represent movement in the air. We also read Faith Ringgold's book Tar Beach, and talked about why people might imagine that they could fly.
Starry Nights: Building on our understanding of landscapes, students observed how Van Gogh painted to create a feeling of movement and depth. As students created these landscapes, they were to use brush marks to create a feeling of movement in the sky or weather and then show "near" and "far" with where they placed things in relation to the horizon line.
Landscape Drawings: On a beautiful fall day, the first grade art classes went outside so we could see a horizon line. Then we drew landscapes based on things we could actually see in front of our school. You can tell where we were sitting as we drew!
Sometimes artists get ideas when they observe nature. We got ideas for these designs by carefully observing patterns and textures in pictures of animals.
