Perception:
Identify and respond to:
- Sensory qualities and design elements in the environment and artworks
- Underlying structures and design principles in the environment and artworks
- Aesthetic qualities in the environment and artworks
Students become aware of and develop an ability to use different vantage points, e.g. side views, top views, for observing objects and scenes. They learn to perceive and describe subtle visual qualities such as lines, colors, shapes, textures, and patterns within the natural and constructed environment.

Creative Expression :
Acquire skills to:
- Develop ideas for art based on varied sources
- Refine and extend ideas for visual expression
- Apply design elements and principles
- Use two- and three-dimensional media for expression
Students continue to create art based on imagination, recall, and observation. They learn to portray details, depict action, use different vantage points, and plan their use of visual qualities to express an idea, feeling or non-verbal message. Activities develop flexibility and problem-solving skills in two- and three-dimensional media and art forms.
Culture and Heritage :
Know about:
- Artworks and artistic traditions in different cultures and times
- Varied influences on styles and types of artwork, past and present
- Art careers and resources in the community
- Types and function of art in everyday life
Artworks are selected to help students appreciate themes, types and styles of art. The functions, cultural origin and relative age of selected artworks are studies along with methods and reasons for creating art. The concept of living with art is developed in lessons about crafts, architecture, and related art forms.
Informed Judgment:
Be able to:Positive attitudes about the process of looking at art are reinforced and extended. Students learn to perceive more subtle visual qualities in their own art and the art of adults. They use art terms to describe, analyze, and interpret visual qualities of artworks. They develop skill in citing specific features in an artwork to explain their judgment of it.
